Ein Obdachloser hatte vermutlich in dem Container für Pappe und Papier übernachtet. Der 33-Jährige rief noch um Hilfe, dann schluckte ihn das Müllauto. Gegen 6.37 Uhr ging der erste Notruf bei der Polizei ein. Die Arbeiter hatten den Entleerungs-Mechanismus gestoppt. Die Feuerwehr sollte helfen, weil sich der Container nicht einfach wieder abladen ließ – sonst hätte die Presse im Müllwagen den Menschen zerquetscht. So wurde der Wagen samt Container zu einem Hof in Berlin-Spandau transportiert. Die betroffenen Arbeiter kamen unter Schock mit einem Rettungswagen ins Bundeswehrkrankenhaus.
